History of Reef Fish Identification

For more than 25 years Reef Fish Identification has been the best selling marine life reference for the region!

Paul Humann and Ned DeLoach published the first edition of Reef Fish Identification – Florida, Caribbean, Bahamas in the Fall of 1989. Since then the field guide has gone through 16 printings of four editions. The second edition received the Independent Book Publishers Ben Franklin Award for Best Reference Book of 1994. The success of the partner’s photographic fish identification guide to the tropical western Atlantic was soon followed by two companion volumes, Reef Creature Identification and Reef Coral Identification, which together make up the now famous Reef Set.

The popular, user-friendly format conceived for the tropical western Atlantic identification books spawned a series of fish identification books for other regions including the Galapagos Islands, the West Coast from California to Alaska, the Gulf of California to Panama and the Tropical Pacific. Along the way, the partners also published Reef Fish Behavior. Their tenth comprehensive marine life guide, entitled Reef Creature Identification – Tropical Pacific, was released in 2010.
